Real Life Time Travel
January 16, 2008
I was in college in the early-nineties, and have recently acquired song singles from Amazon, just enjoying the heck out of stuff I hadn’t heard since I was twenty.
One of them is “Love Is,” a duet by Brian McKnight & Vanessa Williams. Lord, I loved that song. Nowadays, she’s a love-to-hate-her character on “Ugly Betty.” I barely remember the brouhaha over her resigning the Miss America crown, which was significant because she was the first African-American to win it, but the happy asterisk ending is that the crown went to the first runner-up, who was also African-American.
There’s also a few songs by Boyz 2 Men. I have a particularly fond memory of their song “End of the Road.” I dated a fraternity boy for much of college, and it was a dance at the house where I had spent many nights drinking and dancing.
This particular night, a formal event for the fraternity, a “date night,” I thought I would never be happier, held by my boyfriend in his arms. And now I can time travel back to that night every time I hear that song. Course, the more I listen to the song, the less the time-travel aspect, but it’s still there.
I’m in a black, sequined halter-top dress and I couldn’t be happier.
